Dr. Satya Bhushan Verma was Professor Emeritus
in the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi;
Visiting Professor and Academic Advisor in
Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University of Japan;
and Director, JIGA Institute of Japanese
Language, New Delhi. Prof. Verma had been
the first professor of Japanese language
and literature in India and the founder chairman
of the Centre for East Asian Languages in
Jawaharlal Nehru University. He was also
Visiting Professor in the International Research
Centre for Japanese Studies in Kyoto, Japan
during 1991-92.
He died at 9:30 a.m. 13 Januray 2005, due
to a massive heart attack. He is survived
by his wife.
Prof. Verma had a number of publications
including numerous articles in national and
international journals, and translations
from Japanese. He was also the translator
of Leo Huberman's " Man's Worldly Goods
" from English into Hindi and author
of the Japanese-Hindi Dictionary.
Decorated with " The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays
with Rosette " by the Emperor of Japan in 1996, Prof Verma
is recipient of many honours and awards from India and Japan
including ' Masaoka Shiki International Haiku Award' by Ehime
Cultural Foundation in 2002.
